Title: RAC Roadside Safety: Everything you need to know- Batteries!
Broadcast: 4th March 2018
Presenter: Chrissy Morrissy

Battery faults are one of the most common causes of car breakdowns. Who knows what to do if our car battery attempts to ruin the road trip?

  • Batteries don't have a guaranteed life span and it can be affected by a number of factors such as: the climate, how long you drive for, and just basic maintenance.
  • Before you set off, it's not a bad idea to get your local RAC Auto Services Technician. RAC uses a battery diagnostic tool that not only tests the battery but also tests the vehicles charging system, so it checks for faults that may have caused the battery failure.
  • You can jump start modern cars following the correct procedures but it's not recommended for anyone not fully trained carrying this out as it can create a spike that will damage on-board computers and lose settings i.e. radio, seat adjustment etc.
  • When you're away and the car is back at home, the battery will slowly lose charge over time. Make sure you do one of two things:
    • Give your keys to a friend or family member and ask them to drive it regularly, or;
    • Purchase or borrow a maintenance charger otherwise known as a 'battery charger'.
  • Make sure you get a battery charger that's suitable for your car and is a modern type that has an automatic off function. This will allow you to plug it in and leave it on charge whilst you’re away. Avoiding a drained battery when you return.
