Steep Point

Episode: Summer Special
Broadcast: 28th November 2015
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Trevor visits one of his most favorite WA destinations and takes in the breathtaking sights of Steep Point.

  • The landscape is a stark contrast to the red sand dunes found on Peron Peninsula. Here the white sand dunes are surrounded by secluded beaches and azure blue waters.
  • The trek to get to the location can only be made by a four-wheel drive. It’s approximately 185km by road from the northwest coastal highway to Steep Point.
  • The first 41km of the journey is sealed, followed by 114km of a formed but unsealed road and the last 30km of the trip is over very soft sand.
  • A huge part of the joy in visiting this area is taking the time to discover the landscape. It’s an amazing place with so many different things to see and do; Fishing, hiking, landscape photography, shell collecting and beach combing are great fun; it’s relaxing and brings you closer to nature.
  • There isn’t much that can rival the beauty of Zutydorp Cliffs. The cliffs are famous for its shipwrecks and it was named after a Dutch East Indian vessel that crashed against the rocks in the early 1700’s.
  • What makes this place so amazing is the fishing. This is one of the few places on the planet left where you can still game fish and catch things like Marlon, Spanish Mackerel and tuna, the marine life is also diverse with dolphins, whales and manta rays.
