Nikki discovers the many laid back activities to enjoy at the seaside twin town of Dongara and Port Denison.
- The twin towns are in the Shire of Irwin, sitting on the Indian Ocean coast with the scenic Irwin River flowing between them.
- The area is known for its beautiful white sandy beaches ideal for swimming and water sports like surfing, kitesurfing, jet skiing, and offers some of the best recreational fishing in Western Australia.
- Port Denison has one of the largest and most productive fishing boat harbours in WA, commonly known crayfishing.
- The towns are home to one of the few remaining drive-in movie theatres in Western Australia, showing films seasonally from October to May.
- The Irwin River Estuary and boardwalk area is great for birdwatching and tranquil walks through native coastal surroundings.
- The towns offer local produce and tasting experiences such as award-winning spirits at the Illegal Tender Rum Co Distillery and fresh seafood straight off the wharf.
- The Port Denison foreshore features the ruins of the old jetty from 1867 and a Fisherman’s Memorial Obelisk lookout with panoramic views of the marina.
- Visitors can explore the 4km Heritage Walk trail in Dongara, highlighting 28 heritage buildings, including the Royal Flour Mill built in 1894, Priory Lodge and the Old Police Station built in 1870.
