Story: The Races WA Country Cup Stories in Marble Bar
Episode: 7
Presenter: Nikki Parkinson
Air Date: 24th March 2024

Nikki visits Marble Bar and showcases its weird and whimsical events, and historical importance.

  • Marble Bar is an escape, a quiet place with acres of land nestled in the heart of the Pilbara, boasting plenty of national heritage and a sense of community like no other.
  • The town's name originated from a bar in Jasper, which was mistaken for marble on the bed of the Coongan River. It was officially gazetted in 1893 after the discovery of gold by Francis Jenkins in 1890, and to this day, it remains a popular destination.
  • Marble Bar is so rich in gold that pieces of it can still be discovered in the surrounding bushland.
  • Located 40km away from town on Port Hedland Road is Dooleena Gorge, an oasis amidst the red dusty landscape. When water flows at Dooleena Gorge, it becomes an excellent spot for a shady picnic, a swim, and a breathtaking sunset view.
  • The Marble Bar races are iconic events in the Pilbara race calendar, attracting racegoers from all over the country. The past few years without races have only heightened anticipation, and the success of the 2023 races promises an even bigger and better event in the future.
  • The Iron Clad Hotel, one of the first hotels erected in 1982 using sheets of corrugated iron, is now a beloved spot to enjoy a meal and explore the pub's memorabilia.
