Quentin takes a drive to Wongan Hills to discover what our wildflower season has to offer.
- The greatest flower show on earth starts around June each year in WA’s North and moves in a wave southward over the next six months.
- There are over 12,000 species of flora, 60% of which are not found anywhere else on earth, so be sure to plan your trip to experience this natural wonder.
- The town of Wongan Hills is only 180km north of Perth and is a wildflower hotspot.
- The drive is relatively short and perfectly suited for a day trip, or better yet – a weekend getaway.
- For a great view, head to the top of Mt O’Brien. The lookout has information about the area for you to read and once you have done that be sure to take in the breathtaking views of the countryside.
- The Reynoldson reserve is 20kms north of town and is like the holy grail of destinations for anyone hoping to see Verticordia, or Feather Flowers.
- From the 1st – 3rd of November the town holds its annual Verticordia Festival, which is definitely a great event to be part of.
- The area is extremely diverse with more than 1400 species of flowering plants, 24 species of which, are unique to the Wongan Hills and there are a number of walk trails around the area where you can see them.
- There are lots of other treasures just waiting to be discovered in the town of Wongan Hills and while you are there, be sure to check out the heritage listed original Wongan Hills Hospital built in 1930.
- Now the Pioneer Museum, the old hospital is manned by members of the local historical society and houses the community’s history from an original settlers’ cottage to the local doctor’s rooms.
A great day out or extended weekend, be sure to add a visit to Wongan Hills as a must do on your road trip list.
