Just an hour out of Perth, Northam and the Avon Valley is a trip back in time showcasing our indigenous and colonial history of WA.
- Start your morning by seeing Northam from the sky on a hot air balloon!
- Once you’re back on land, you’ll be happy for the early start as there is so much to explore in Northam
- Right near the Avon River, the Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge a new high tech interactive experience to teach locals and visitors about the indigenous culture in the area
- We have so many languages native to our state. In Northam, we are in Nyoongar land and the language they speak is Nyungar
- The translation of Bilya Koort Boodja means river, heart, land.
- Northam is full of things to do and places to explore, and It’s the starting point for the Avon Descent, home to a rich agricultural community, there are many heritage buildings to explore and you can even take a trip to check out the artwork painted on huge silos nearby as part of the FORM Silo Trail.
- Morby Cottage is one of WA’s oldest surviving colonial residences
- The cottage was built in 1836 by John Morrell, the first European to settle in Northam in 1832
- It was built using locally sourced materials, but the window frames and panes travelled all the way with him from England to Australia by boat
- The old railway station has been repurposed as the Heritage Museum, run by volunteers, the museum is a great snapshot of the history of Northam
- There are lots of options for an overnight stay in town and The Duke’s Inn is a real old fashioned country hotel and is heritage listed, has a friendly atmosphere, comfy beds and quality food
