WA drive experiences have never been more popular, and the Pilbara is such a special place to do so with its rich in minerals from the ancient rocks, its value lies in the spectacular ancient landscape that's taken 2.5 billion years to weather into the place you see today. On your drive you will discover the town of Parabudoo developed for the purpose of servicing nearby Mine sites.

  • Paraburdoo was given its name from the Indigenous word, Pirupardu, meaning ‘meat feathers’ because of the large resident populations of white Corellas. The town is located on the desert fringe at the edge of the Hamersley Ranges and is also one of the main access towns to Karijini.
  • Keep your eye out for the Resilience Scultpure on the way into town. The sculpture is made from materials sourced from the local mine site and created by a collaboration of community support. Today it is a landmark of great significance for the community and visitors to the region who love to get a photo on the way through.
  • Following nearly 50 years of activity in the Paraburdoo area, Rio Tinto play’s a big part in this community, supporting the development of the wider Shire of Ashburton and the people who live here.
  • Rio Tinto contributed $6 million towards construction and a further $2.5 million for the first five years for operational support for the new Paraburdoo Community Hub, a multi-purpose facility featuring a new oval, pool amenities, gymnasium and refurbished sports hall.
  • As well as the Community Hub, Rio Tinto helped build the childcare centre and skate park, which help to foster a more inclusive community for families living in the town.
  • The recent launch of the Paraburdoo Learning Club managed by the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation and supported by Rio Tinto, is one of many academic, social and cultural enrichment programmes that Rio Tinto support in the Pilbara region.
