WA is blessed with some incredible locations, but there is one that doesn’t get the love it deserves – the Pilbara. Full of spectacular landscapes, great people and fascinating ancient history, it a truly amazing place.
- 122km inland from Karratha lies Millstream Chichester National Park. Covering 2382 square kilometres, it was named after the explorer Francis Gregory who recognised that the stream running through the area would be able to turn a mill.
- Ngurrangga Tours offer Aboriginal cultural tours educating visitors on the ancient history of the area.
- The homestead at Millstream has a fairly modern history, having been around since the late 19th century with people living there until the 1960s. The local Aboriginal people have been living in the area for thousands of years, and the region has sustained them for all that time.
- The water stream that bubbles up from the ground is always clean and fast flowing. It flows down into the main Fortescue River, where after a couple of hundred kilometres it reaches the Indian Ocean.
- The area is something of an oasis, with both native and foreign palm trees. The date palms were planted by cameleers in the 1800s, and have spread throughout the region.
- At the halfway point to Karijini National Park from Karratha, Millstream is an absolute must visit experience. The tour offers a special insight into the ancient cultures and beliefs that are still held today, such as the area’s rainmaking site, where the Fortescue River was carved by the Rainbow Serpent, who came up from the ocean and made his way in.
- Make sure you add a cultural tour with Clinton to your next visit to the region, it is a must do experience.
