Fremantle Prison

Episode: 3
Title: Fremantle Prison
Broadcast: 18th February 2018
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

The port town of Fremantle is one of the best places to visit in Western Australia, as it’s rich in diversity and history. Trevor takes a visit to WA’s only world heritage listed site, Fremantle Prison.

  • The prison was originally known as The Convict’s Establishment. In 1867 it was changed to, ‘Fremantle Prison’ and closed in 1991 after a significant riot. It’s hard to believe that a significant part of our colonial history closed just over a quarter of a century ago.
  • Janine Della Bosca, Perth’s Award Winning Tour guide, works at Fremantle Prison and showed Trevor around. Janine also lets us know some of other great tours available to take.
  • Over the years the prisons uses and population changed dramatically. When Perth Jail closed its gate in 1888, Fremantle became WA’s number 1 maximum-security prison.
  • This prison has played host to tens of thousands of Australian prisoners. From the petty to the notorious and a number of successful and unsuccessful escapes
  • In 2018 Fremantle Prison have 3 new tours coming in; a convict prison tour, behind bars tour and a true crimes tour to tell the stories of some of WA’s biggest criminals.
