Story: Rotto Shark Dive
Episode: 3
Presenter: Chrissy Morrissy
Air Date: 16 February 2025
Chrissy explains that more than 70 percent of WA is coastline and the best way to see it is from beneath the waves.
- Chrissy had the opportunity to explore one of Rottnest Island’s most unique dive sites, often referred to as ‘The Opera House’, thanks to an offer from Perth Dive Academy.
- The dive begins with a quick descent into a nondescript cave opening. Due to the reef preventing boat anchoring, a guide is highly recommended to locate the site.
- The cave reaches a depth of 38 metres, making it a relatively short but thrilling dive. Divers should plan accordingly to maximise their experience throughout the day.
- The cave is home to massive schools of bullseye fish, soft corals that create an eerie backdrop, and Grey Nurse Sharks, which use the cave as a nursery.
- While only a few were spotted during the dive, some encounters have included up to a dozen of these graceful and docile sharks. Despite their size, they pose no threat to divers.
- For peace of mind, a Shark Shield is recommended for divers concerned about more aggressive shark species. Chrissy used one for ascent but turned it off inside the cave to fully enjoy the experience.
