The Races WA – Country Cup Stories

Story: The Races WA – Country Cup Stories
Episode: 3
Presenter: Nikki Parkinson
Air Date: 25th February 2024

Nikki visits Albany, one of Perth’s must-see towns, and takes the time to explore attractions such as the Museum of the Great Southern, National Anzac Centre and the Albany Cup.

    • Located 5 hours drive south of Perth at the southernmost tip of Western Australia, Albany was the site of WA’s first European settlement prior to the Swan River Colony in 1826.
    • The Museum of the Great Southern shares the stories of the Menang Noongar people and the influence of Mokare, an intermediary who assisted European explorers in an unfamiliar environment, and explores the region's unique landscapes, flora and fauna.
    • A replica of the Brig Amity stands permanently at the Museum of the Great Southern and allows visitors to find out what life was like aboard a convict ship in 1826, by following a perilous 6-week journey from Sydney to King George Sound to establish the first European settlement on the west coast of Australia.
    • At the National Anzac Centre, visitors can learn all about the important role Albany played in World War 1, where over 40,000 service men and women departed the harbour bound for the Great War in 1914.
    • Located at the Percy Spencer Racecourse on Roberts Road, The Albany Racing Cup has a history of more than 150 years (dating back to its establishment in 1865) and is the place to be trackside to enjoy fashion, a friendly atmosphere, place a bet or simply socialise.
