  • Shoalwater is one of Western Australia’s most important protected marine areas. It also has extensive cultural significance to the Noongar people of the region.
  • In the Dreaming, the park’s famous Penguin Island was said to be part of a giant crocodile, called Yondok, who was torn apart in a fight with the Rainbow Serpent - creating this chain of islands along the coast, including Seal and Penguin Island.
  • Penguin Island is accessible via ferries that depart from Mersery Point every hour between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
  • Penguin Island Discovery Centre is run by the Department of Wildlife, the entrance fee goes towards helping to rehabilitate orphaned penguins and those in distress. It also helps to maintain the island and keep the population of penguins safe.
  • The Penguin Feeding sessions are a great way to get up close and personal with the cutest island residents with sessions happening daily at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm.
  • The Islands of Shoalwater are also a great spot for diving, snorkelling, kayaking or a boat cruise where you can spot the local wildlife or even swim with the local dolphins!
