Air Date: 26th of April
Phil sets out on a coastal adventure to find the gentle stingrays of Hamelin Bay.
- The best time to see the Hamelin Bay stingrays is during the summer months (December to February), in the early morning, typically between 8:00 am and 10:00 am.
- Hamelin Bay is located on the southwest coast of Western Australia, within the Margaret River region, between Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturaliste.
- There are two main types of stingrays found at Hamelin Bay.
- The smooth stingray is the largest of the world’s stingrays and is dark grey or black, with a round shape.
- The eagle ray is diamond-shaped with pointed wings and is often a paler shade of brown, brownish-grey, or even blue-grey rather than black.
- The best times to visit are in the morning between 9:00 am–10:00 am or in the afternoon when the fishing boats return.
- The stingrays at Hamelin Bay beach are protected and must not be harmed.
- Stingrays will eat almost anything they find and are often referred to as the “vacuum cleaners of the sea.”
