Chrissy takes us deep into the heart of the Pilbara, where the mining town of Newman doubles as a launchpad for epic outback adventures. With her local guide Nic, she sets off on a rugged 4WD journey to the breathtaking Kalgan Pool, navigating river crossings, unexpected challenges, and stunning red rock country, all part of soaking up true Pilbara life.

  • Newman is the largest town in the East Pilbara region, established in the 1960s to support iron ore mining at Mount Whaleback, which remains the world’s largest open-cut iron ore mine.
  • Located about 12 hours north of Perth, Newman sits just above the Tropic of Capricorn and serves as a key hub for both mining operations and outback tourism.
  • Originally known as Mount Newman, the town was built by the Mount Newman Mining Company (now BHP) and lies at the base of the Ophthalmia Range.
  • Today, Newman is a well-equipped town with shops, restaurants, a visitors' centre, airport, art gallery, medical services, and multiple caravan and camping options, welcoming tourists alongside its FIFO workforce.
  • Kalgan Pool lies roughly 60–90 minutes north of Newman and is accessed via a rugged 4WD track featuring several river and creek crossings, making it a favourite among adventure seekers.
  • The pool sits within a dramatic gorge, fed by seasonal rains and mining-related dewatering, and is known for its striking red cliffs and cool, swimmable waters.
  • It’s a popular free camping destination, home to native wildlife like turtles, fish, birds, and the occasional python, offering a peaceful, natural retreat deep in the Pilbara.
  • While remote, the site is pet-friendly and accessible with a road permit from the Newman Visitor Centre, which also provides maps and safety info for exploring the area.
