Story: A Day of Nature and Healing: Exploring Caversham Wildlife Park
Episode: 13
Presenter: Kate Mac
Air date: 28th May 2023
Kate takes a self-care day by exploring the cute, interesting and wildly entertaining world of animals at the Caversham Wildlife park.
- Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease a human’s levels of cortisol - a stress related hormone - and lower blood pressure, and has the potential to reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support and boost one’s mood.
- Scientists have spent time looking at how different types of pets can affect your mental and physical health. The average Australian spends roughly 5.5 hours a day on screens, 90% of their time or more being indoors.
- Spending time in nature is, by contrast, linked to both cognitive benefits and improvements in mood, menetal health and emotional well-being and can boost your creative problem-solving abilities.
- The Caversham Wildlife Park hosts a farm show at 10am, 1pm and 3pm each day for children to enjoy, where they can watch sheep shearing, crack a stock whip, milk a cow, bottle a lamb and even meet a stockman on horseback.
- Caversham is just 40 minutes away from the CBD and is a wonderful day trip to visit with the whole family.
