  • Imintji Campground is an authentic Aboriginal experience and part of Tourism Western Australia’s camping with Custodians project.
  • Camping with Custodians is an initiative of setting up camp grounds where tourists are able to have contact with indigenous communities and people, and share cultures.
  • The campground is nestled on the eastern side of the ranges about 210km along the Gibb River Road from Derby and even in the dry season it’s an oasis of green offering travellers’ hot showers, cooking facilities and more.
  • The campground and art centre is a long term aspiration of the Ngarinyin people, in particular elder Jack Dale who wanted to share the sights and sounds of his country whilst generating income and employment from the land for his people.
  • Jacks family members now carry on his vision for him and are involved with running the campground as well as the roadhouse and art gallery for him.
  • A short walk from the campground you will find the community store, with delicious homemade food and a display on the community to learn about Jack.
  • John Bennett is the Mentor of the community and originates from Texas, he is there to support the people of Imintji and help generate income and make the community sustainable.
  • Dylan Cartwright is a traditional owner of the land and explains that Imintji means ‘a place to sit down’, it is a place where indigenous people use to come and have their cultural ceremonies, they would stop at the creek known as settlers springs for water also.
  • Art is a big part of community and the community has some very talented artists.
  • Anyone who calls in is encouraged to sit down, share their stories or even try their hand at painting.
  • You don’t need to book to stay at Imintji, though you may want to give yourself enough time to sit with the locals and soak up some culture.
  • A great location to stay at or just stop for a coffee when traveling the Gibb River Road and region.
